- Sector: Telco
- Innovation: Cloud
The GENIO project represents an innovative Edge Computing platform enabled by a new intelligent OLT (Optical Line Terminal) for GPON networks. In this article, we will explore the details of the project and its impact in the telecommunications world.
The GENIO project is part of the funding program of the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy and is part of the Fund for Sustainable Growth (F.C.S.). GENIO’s main goal is to create a platform that blurs the boundary between Cloud services and telecommunications networks, enabling Cloud logic service delivery within a broadband telecommunications network.
Key objectives
- Capillary Edge Computing: exploiting the evolution of Optical Line Terminal ( OLT ) nodes for fixed fiber optic networks. These nodes are moving toward a software-defined and open-standard approach. GENIUS will build a distributed, local and ubiquitous computing platform managed according to Cloud logic.
- Third-Party Services and Applications: hosting third-party services and applications, enabling innovative service scenarios.
- Services close to users: placing services close to customers, enabling the delivery of applications with fast response times.
- Ecosystem-Driven Security: managing application life cycles, ensuring reliability and security.
- Cost-Efficient Operations: optimize operations and reduce expenses through local data processing while minimizing external data traffic.
COMBINE
Integrates network and computing resources in a flexible software-defined environment.
COMMENT
It communicates seamlessly with traditional data center-based cloud models.
BUDGET
It optimally manages node workloads, reallocating processing as needed.
RESERVE
Defines service profiles and reserves network and computational resources to meet SLAs.
Advantages of GENIUS
- Competitive Edge: GENIUS aims to offer stable high-speed access for the growing demand of 1 Gbps+ by 2027.
- Future-Proofing Network: GENIO enables long-term speed upgrades with minimal investment, without the need to change equipment, as well as improved energy efficiency.
- Boost Revenue: Enables revenue diversification without additional investment, supporting gigabit services for both consumers and wholesalers.
ECSO and MADE: the GENIUS model.
The traditional traffic management model requires expensive infrastructure and complex traffic management, with a significant impact on latency, especially for real-time applications. In contrast, GENIO introduces an Edge Computing model with XGS-PON/NG-PON2, which optimizes the user experience by minimizing delays and meeting user expectations.
GENIO | ECSO (Extended Computing Node and Secure OLT)
represents the evolution of a disaggregated OLT architecture, based on SDN and NFV, combined with a software-defined computing stack.
GENIUS | MADE (Multi-Access Dynamic Edge)
introduces a new operating paradigm for distributed IT services, focusing on security, reliability, low latency, high performance and real-time responsiveness.
